This photograph is from January 5th, 2019 and was captured at the Delta Sky Club, Concourse A near gate 1 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It’s a photograph of a sunset over the tarmac showing a United Airlines plane, the Seattle Link light rail, and a La Quinta Inn (left to right) with Mount Rainier towering over it all in the background.

As one might guess, I prefer the window seat on an airplane. If it’s a short flight at night (my camera’s not quite powerful enough to photograph without sunlight … yet), I typically look for seating on the aisle. I also make a point to take a look at exit-row seating. If you have airline status, selecting the exit row is generally complimentary, and exit-row seats on smaller planes tend to occur in rows of two. I opt for sitting in the second row; exit-row seats don’t recline, so sitting behind one maximizes your space.

On long-haul and international flights, I’d recommend trying out the bulkhead, exit-row seat in economy. Why? You get all the benefits of the window, plus there’s enough space to walk around the person seated next to you to access the aisle. Here are some tips for selecting the seat:

  • Bulkhead, exit-row does not allow for under-seat storage of your bags. Though, if you board in an early group, chances are you’ll have an overhead bin to yourself.

  • The meal tray and screen are generally tucked between the seats. You may need to ask a flight attendant to help locate it, but a latch or button will release them.

  • You may not have a pouch in front of you. If you are on the window, there will be a literature pocket on the wall. I travel with a system of small bags and carabiners. With a carabiner, you can clip accessories (like a water bottle) to the pocket.

  • Bulkhead, exit-row seats are typically located behind the main lavatory. If you’re having an issue with smells, ensure the door is closed after someone leaves the lavatory.

  • A flight attendant will be seated facing toward you during takeoff and arrival. If you’ve been good—and they’re in the mood—turn this into an opportunity and get some travel tips for your destination.

I prefer exit row over premium economy. With the exception of first and business class, you’re getting the most space on the plane for a fraction of the cost.
